Rich in History
The City of Orange, California is one that is steeped in history, maintaining its strong sense of story over the past century. Founded in 1871 by attorneys Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, the city was originally deemed “Richland,” with the intention of creating a prosperous farming community. But with a similar namesake already existing in Sacramento County, a new name was selected, and the City of Orange, California was born.
Over the years, intrigue around the name has continued to build. Old town lore suggests the name “Orange” was chosen by the winner of a poker game among the founders. Others assume it was named after the city’s citrusy cash crop.
When choosing our name for The Richland, the local history inspired us to pay homage through its own historical naming, affinity for celebrating, and appreciation for all things Orange.
